LYRICS
Looking for a reason to wake up
Shouldn’t it be you?
I know it’s a heavy burden to take up
But I offer it to you
Shouldn’t it be you?
You ain’t got no candy for my soul
Just medicine, raw and whole
No sugar spoon to hide the taste
Just shovel it right in my face
You say things I think that you don’t mean
Or I pretend it’s fantasy
But it’s obvious that I can’t be
the man you want naturally
It’s no use to tell you that this ain’t fair
With you there’re some things that I can’t share
Like my dreams

LYRICS
Fell out of bed last night, I could not sleep
Didn’t have no one to call
I just wanted somebody to show me
There’s nobody hiding on the other side of the wall
Saying a prayer that I’d get through the night
Started feeling around for the flashlight
Fell out of bed last night, I could not sleep
Just the same as the one before
All I needed was somebody to show me
That I don’t belong here down on the floor
Like so many nights there by my bed
Leaned up to rest my head
And just sat there dreaming
Dreaming of dreaming
If I could set this restless mind at ease
Then I’d be dreaming
Safe and sound
Laying my burden down
Lord only knows why I keep hanging on
Situations play out in my head until the break of dawn
To drift away, drift away to a song I leave the radio on
But outside those city streets are alive and beating like a drum
My mind is reeling like a kid on a swing
But I won’t feel a thing
When I’m dreaming
Dreaming of dreaming
If I could set this restless mind at ease
Then I’d be dreaming
Safe and sound
Laying my burden down

LYRICS
Some kind of servant of love
Your little girl wanted
A champion of love
That is what she wanted
But even just the faintest trace of sympathy
Might have been enough
To lighten her heart
Maybe flowers and well wishes
Even a blind attempt at empathy
But your answer is to chasten her like she deserves
Something short of what she wants
When what she wants is you to be
A servant of love
A champion of love
Careful of her heart now
Careful of her soul now
Careful of the lessons you’ll be teaching her
If you go for what you want
What do you want?
A family portrait where everyone looks the same?
Or a man who loves her before he loves himself?
What will you do when she is older
And she can choose just what she wants?
Time’s running out for you to be
A servant of love
A champion of love
What are you gonna sacrifice?
When are you gonna sacrifice?
You know she’s growing up so fast
Time’s running out
What you gonna do
now that she’s crying out…
“Daddy, won’t you be my St. Valentine?
Before I forget how to love?
Before I forget how to love you?”
Time’s running out

What kind of love are you searching for
That brought you here today?
What kind of love are your searching for
that brought you here to me?
Is it the kind that makes you smile?
Or the kind that makes you cry?
If you stay right here for awhile
You may not have to decide
What kind of love?
You want a million candles to light up your heart
But you know they go out when it rains
And though you may not see the sun ‘less the clouds break apart
the warmth it brings always remains
so…
You wanting love from me or everybody?
You wanting love from me?
What kind of love?
You can’t tell you what to want
But you can let it be
What kind of love are you searching for?
What kind of Love?

I wanted to post a special song for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, so I recorded JerryMoore’s setting of the Dudley Randall poem “The Ballad of Birmingham”. The poem eulogizes four young girls who died in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963.
Dr. King gave a Eulogy for three of the four girls on September 18, 1963.
I heard JerryMoore’s setting of the poem for the first time a few weeks ago. It had such an impact on me. Works like this ensure that we’ll never forget the importance of Dr. King’s message.
Please listen and share on this very special day.
Dr. King. Champion of Peace. Happy Birthday.

My best friend told me a lie
Built up my confidence inside
Kept me from being shy
So I’d say “hi”
Would’ve been your fantasy in my head
Straight out some storybook you read
The one you always dreamed you’d wed
But instead
All you wanted was me, just me
All you wanted was me
So away, away we go, get down
So away, away we go
Would’ve dressed in my best rhythm and rhyme
Try to get you alone just one time
And with a thousand angels sing
Of love so true
I’d have kept you blind to all my flaws
Those faults I fear might give you pause
When upon my knee this ring I have for you
But I didn’t have to
All you wanted was me, just me
All you wanted was me
So away, away we go, get down
So away, away we go
And it blows my mind
That I spent all of this time
Trying to trip you into love with me
When you fell all by yourself
